What I thought about while staring blankly at the ceiling in a hospital waiting room
There's a large air-conditioning fan mounted on the ceiling. It keeps turning at a slow, steady pace—probably set to "low."
What would happen if someone switched it to "max"?
Accompanied by a roar like a violent storm, the fan would spin at full speed.Papers around the room would lift into the air, posters on the walls would flap and flutter. The fans on the ceilings of the examination rooms and the lobbywould begin to roar in unison. And then this whole hospital would rise off the ground. The building would tilt from time to time, and everything would slide to one side.We would cling to the sofas, trying not to be thrown off.
A nurse's voice calls out:"Ticket number 146, please come in."
I get up, stumbling along the wall, and head toward the examination room.
